Mobile data-gathering robot that uses wave motion and solar energy to propel itself through ocean conditions. Can be operated individually or in fleets. Key capabilities include programmable course navigation, vessel detection and avoidance, multivehicle fleet operations, flexible piloting, seaside control, and third party navigation support. Communications operate via satellite, cellular, and wifi networks. Wave Gliders have been used as mobile hotspots for coordinating and communicating with other ocean robots and sensors; can enable continuous sampling of metaocean data; and has detected, reported, and tracked unmanned surface vehicles.
