About SAFET

SAFET brings together a global network of technology developers and implementers that are committed to addressing the biggest challenges in the seafood and fisheries world. Emerging technologies play a key role to address issues such as environmental sustainability, social responsibility, provenance, equity, and economic viability. We believe there is a growing need for a central convening force in the fisheries and seafood technology space, one which better connects technology providers with implementers, increases the flow of information between developers and stakeholders, enables adoption and scale, does these things actively, and one that is truly global in scope. SAFET’s mission is to realize the full potential of emerging technologies that ensure the sustainability and resilience of fisheries and the communities that depend on them, globally.

SAFET’s hallmark event is its Biennial Conference. Previous conferences have taken place in Honiara in 2014, Auckland in 2016, Bangkok in 2019 and virtually in 2020 and 2021. Participation and interest in SAFET among the fisheries and seafood community have increased steadily, with each event better attended than the previous. Most recently, the 2020/21 virtual conference increased the SAFET community from ~1,200 to over 2,000 global and engaged stakeholders and our most recent in-person conference had over 260 participants with 20 exhibitioners. In our next conference, we aim to increase our in-person and online participation.

However, the SAFET global platform is much more than the Biennial Conference – we are a growing community and a movement to help catalyze the uptake and scale of new and emerging technologies in seafood and fisheries.

Interim Managing Director, Janelle Hangen

Janelle has been following fish around since she commercial fished in Alaska in 2006. She has worked as a fisheries biologist and manager in Alaska and Maryland, supported fisheries projects at NOAA and helped launch Rare’s Fish Forever program. Most recently, she led research and analytics for Pew’s International Fisheries team. Janelle currently plays a key role on EDF’s Ocean Technology Solutions team advancing solutions for climate change resilient fisheries around the world. Along with other tasks, as Interim Managing Director of SAFET, Janelle will drive the strategic planning and governance structure processes and work to recruit and hire a permanent SAFET Director.

SAFET’s Steering Committee provides guidance and support on the execution of SAFET events, particularly our Biennial Conference. The Committee is made up of a broad range of fishery and technology experts from around the world that share a common goal to support and develop sustainable fisheries and responsible seafood supply chains through the lens of emerging tech.

SAFET is support by Multiplier who provides administrative assistance to the SAFET team, including for example, contract management, payroll and asset management.

Emerging technology has always been at the core of this event and we are here to learn about how innovative and evolving technologies can help solve some of the most challenging problems in the fisheries and seafood space.
